Would you be willing to pay more for your American Girl Dolls and accessories if they were made in the USA or Germany?
I think I would pay up to $30 or even $40 more for a new doll, made in the USA or Germany. Especially made in the USA.
VisionForum.com offers 18 inch made in Germany dolls for something like $2 more than Pleasant Co/Mattel. I assume they are making a profit since Vision Forum has been selling these dolls for several years. All of their doll clothes were made in the USA as of recently, too, again, running about $2 more each than comparable American Girl outfits.
The craftsmanship and quality are there when I compare USA vs. China goods in my own home. Plus I feel good supporting jobs at home and knowing that some poor 8 year old in overseas isn't making my things.
I think the doll dresses and accessories are waaaaaay expensive as is. I don't know if I could bring myself to pay more - except I know that when I see beautiful, authentic, handmade gowns on Ebay I am always tempted. If the details are there, etc, I could pay $40 or $50 for a historical dress. But it would have to be super special and I wouldn't be buying a lot of them.
I doubt Mattel would listen - I bet they are the KING of Made In China - but I just might write a letter to let them know how I feel (because I would feel better). An American Girl Doll really ought to be made in America by American craftsman.
